The DOT annual inspection: what to expect

Updated October 2026

Commercial motor vehicles must pass a periodic (annual) inspection at least once every 12 months, and proof of the inspection must be kept, often as a decal or report on the vehicle.

What gets checked

Systems including brakes, coupling devices, exhaust, fuel system, lighting, steering, suspension, frame, tires, wheels and rims, and windshield wipers.

Who can inspect

A qualified inspector who meets federal requirements. Many shops offer annual inspections.
