Preventive maintenance for semi trucks: the basics

Updated October 2026

Preventive maintenance (PM) costs less than breakdowns, tows and missed loads. Build a schedule and stick to it.

The core services

Engine oil and filters, fuel filters, air filters, chassis lubrication, coolant checks, brake inspection and adjustment, tire checks, and transmission and differential fluids.

Set your intervals

Intervals depend on your engine, how you run and oil analysis results. Start with your engine maker's recommendations and adjust with your mechanic.

Keep records

Write down every service with date, mileage and cost. Records help resale value and are required for some inspections. Use our maintenance schedule planner.
