Truck tire care and tread depth rules
Updated October 2026
Tires are one of the most common inspection violations, and one of the biggest costs.
Minimum tread depth
Federal rules require at least 4/32 of an inch on steer tires and at least 2/32 of an inch on other tires, measured in a major groove.
Daily checks
Inflation, cuts, bulges, exposed cords, uneven wear and anything stuck between duals. Under-inflation wears tires fast and wastes fuel.
Save money
Check pressure cold, rotate and align on schedule, and consider retreads for drive and trailer positions where allowed.
